Chapter 1

Understanding Your Skin Structure

Before choosing skincare products, it is important to understand what we are actually caring for.

10 minute read

Your Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It protects us from external factors, helps regulate temperature, prevents water loss, and acts as a barrier between our body and the environment.

The skin has three main layers:

  • Epidermis
  • Dermis
  • Subcutaneous tissue (fat layer)

The Epidermis: Your Protective Surface

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin.

Although it is very thin, it is highly organized and contains several layers of cells.

The outermost part of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum.

This is the layer we see and touch.

It is made primarily of mature skin cells surrounded by lipids that help create a protective barrier.

When this barrier becomes weakened, the skin may become:

  • dry
  • sensitive
  • irritated
  • more reactive

Many skincare ingredients work within the epidermis by supporting hydration, barrier function, and overall skin appearance.

The Dermis: The Support Structure

Below the epidermis is the dermis.

This layer contains:

  • collagen
  • elastin
  • blood vessels
  • nerves
  • supportive structures that give skin strength and elasticity

Collagen provides firmness and structure.

Elastin helps skin maintain flexibility and resilience.

Skin Health Begins From Within

Skincare is important, but healthy skin is not created by products alone.

The body builds important structural proteins such as collagen and elastin using amino acids obtained from food.

Adequate nutrition, especially sufficient protein intake, supports the body’s natural repair and renewal processes.
