Chapter 2

Your Skin Microbiome: The Invisible Ecosystem

10 minute read

Your skin is home to billions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and other forms of microflora. Together, they form your skin microbiome.

Many people think of bacteria as something harmful that needs to be eliminated.
However, healthy skin is not sterile. The goal is not to destroy microorganisms.
The goal is to maintain balance.

The Skin Barrier and Microbiome Connection

Your skin is protected by more than just the microbiome.

It also has a protective layer called the hydrolipid barrier.

This barrier contains:

  • sebum (natural oils)
  • sweat
  • natural moisturizing factors
  • lipids

Together, they create an environment that helps maintain comfortable, healthy skin.

The hydrolipid barrier helps lock in moisture while protecting the skin from external irritants.

When this barrier is disrupted, the skin may become:

  • dry
  • tight
  • sensitive
  • irritated
  • more reactive

Why Mature Skin Needs More Support

As we age, several protective functions of the skin naturally change.

  • Sebum production may decrease.
  • The skin may hold less moisture.
  • The barrier may become less resilient.

This is why many women notice that their skin needs a gentler approach after 40.

The goal is no longer to aggressively remove everything from the skin.

The goal is to support and protect!

Healthy Skin Is Not Matte Skin

For many years, skincare advertising promoted perfectly matte skin as the ideal.

However, healthy skin naturally has luminosity.

A natural glow is often a sign of:

  • good hydration
  • a healthy barrier
  • balanced skin function

Healthy skin does not mean removing everything.

It means creating balance.
