Chapter 22

Mature Skin: When Less Can Be More

Understand why mature and menopausal skin may benefit from more support and fewer aggressive treatments.

7 minute read

Mature and menopausal skin often experiences changes in:

  • Sebum production
  • Hydration
  • Barrier function
  • Skin thickness
  • Elasticity
  • Recovery from irritation

This means that a routine that worked beautifully in your 30s may no longer be appropriate.

Your Skin May Need More:

  • Hydration
  • Nourishment
  • Barrier support
  • Antioxidants
  • Gentle cleansing
  • Consistent sun protection

Your Skin May Need Less:

  • Aggressive exfoliation
  • Multiple strong actives
  • Frequent product changes
  • Harsh cleansing
  • "More is better" experimentation

Exfoliation can still have a place in mature skincare, but it should be approached thoughtfully.

If your skin is dry, thin, sensitive, or barrier-compromised, you may need very gentle exfoliation—or none at all.
