Chapter 13

Heat, Cold & Your Skin

Enjoy wellness practices without exposing sensitive or mature skin to unnecessary extremes.

7 minute read

Heat, Cold & Your Skin

Saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, contrast showers, and facial cooling can be enjoyable parts of a wellness routine.

But your skin does not need extremes to stay healthy.

Heat Exposure

Heat can increase water loss from the skin.

When skin is already dry or sensitive, this may leave it feeling dehydrated or uncomfortable.

If you enjoy saunas or steam rooms:

  • Stay adequately hydrated
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure
  • Support your skin afterward with hydration and moisturizer

Sudden Temperature Changes

Moving rapidly from extreme heat to extreme cold can place additional stress on the skin, particularly for sensitive skin or skin prone to redness and visible capillaries.

Gentler transitions are preferable.

What About Ice on the Face?

Cooling can temporarily make skin appear fresher by affecting blood-vessel constriction and circulation.

However, direct ice application can be too intense for sensitive skin and may aggravate redness or visible capillaries in susceptible individuals.

A gentler alternative is to refrigerate your:

  • Moisturizer
  • Facial mist
  • Jade roller
  • Gua-sha tool
