Hydration & Nourishment: What Does Your Skin Need?

Understand the difference between adding water and supporting the skin barrier with lipids.

8 minute read

Hydration = Water

Hydration and nourishment are often used interchangeably, but they address different needs—

and mature, menopausal skin benefits from both.

Hydration helps the skin attract and retain water, supporting a smoother, plumper, more comfortable appearance.

Common hydrating ingredients include:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Glycerin
  • Saccharide Isomerate
  • Sodium PCA  and other humectants

Hydration helps the skin attract and retain water, supporting a smoother, plumper, more comfortable appearance.

Nourishment = Lipids & Barrier Support

Nourishment refers to ingredients that condition the skin, support barrier function, and help maintain healthy-looking, resilient skin. While lipids are central to barrier support, some vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other active ingredients also help support the skin’s natural functions.

Important nourishing and skin-supporting ingredients include:

  • Plant oils and butters — provide emollient lipids that soften and condition the skin.
  • Squalane — helps replenish the skin’s lipid environment and reduce dryness.
  • Ceramides — important barrier lipids that help strengthen the skin’s protective function and reduce moisture loss.
  • Essential and non-essential fatty acids — contribute to healthy barrier structure and skin conditioning.
  • Vitamins — such as vitamins B, C and E, which provide antioxidant support and can help protect skin from oxidative stress.
  • Minerals and mineral-derived ingredients — certain minerals play important biological roles in skin function,

Think of Your Skin Barrier as a Brick Wall

Skin cells = bricks

Lipids = mortar

When the barrier is healthy, it helps keep moisture inside while protecting the skin from environmental stress.

What does your skin need?

1

Tight, dehydrated, or dull skin:

→ Focus on hydration and barrier support. Hyaluronic acid serum in combination with moisturiser that has ceramides

2

Dry, thin, sensitive, or easily irritated skin:

→ Look for richer nourishing formulas and barrier-supporting lipids, such as ceramides, squalene.

3

Combination or oily but aging skin:

→ Choose hydrating serum with Hyaluronic acid, lightweight moisturiser without unnecessary heaviness.

And remember:

Oily skin can still be dehydrated.
